What is SASE?
SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) converges wide-area networking and cloud-delivered security into one framework. It brings SD-WAN, secure web gateway, CASB, zero-trust network access, firewall-as-a-service and data loss prevention together under one policy. That policy follows the user, whether they're at a branch, at home or on the road.
How is SASE different from SD-WAN?
SD-WAN is the networking layer: it steers traffic across your circuits and sites. SASE includes SD-WAN and adds cloud-delivered security and zero-trust access on top, managed together. If your main goal is site performance and circuit resilience, SD-WAN alone may be enough. If you also need to secure remote users and SaaS access consistently, SASE is the broader fit.
Is SASE the same as zero trust?
No. Zero trust is a security principle: verify every user and device, and grant only the access each one needs. Zero-Trust Network Access (ZTNA) is the SASE component that puts that principle into practice for application access. SASE is the broader framework that combines ZTNA with secure web gateway, CASB, firewall-as-a-service and SD-WAN.
